AECOM History

In 1967, a geo-political and economic organization of ten countries located in Southeast Asia was formed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand and named as “Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)”. Brunei Darussalam then joined in 1984, Viet Nam in 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN. An ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) has been created as a goal by 2015. AEC does not call us only on the free economic movement but also the power to prepare our countries for upcoming changes. Among AEC areas of cooperation, recognition of medical profession and qualifications are included.

Founded in 2013, AECOM (ASEAN Economic Community Ophthalmology Meeting) had first come to its conception during a meeting among the Executive Committee of Thammasat University, Faculty of Medicine and Thammasat Eye Center. Our vision is to build and strengthen a patients' care network in our community and the region. And to achieve that picture, collaborations are imminent. AECOM was established in the hope of nurturing and sustaining such collaborations.

To provide the highest quality continuing education and the most current treatment in Ophthalmology, the AECOM's annual meeting includes Lectures, symposia, and scientific lecture and poster presentations. The annual Meeting provides a diverse array of vision science and relevant education on the latest practices. We hope that ophthalmologists, allied professionals and guests will have the opportunity to interact, network and exchange ideas with colleagues from the region and across the globe to improve their knowledge, clinical skills and to elevate the science and art of Ophthalmology to a whole new level.

Following the success the 1st and 2nd AECOM in Bangkok, Thailand in 2013 and 2014 that brought together delegates from ASEAN countries, AECOM will continue to be held annually to serve as an important platform in the region for ophthalmologists and visual scientists to share their expertise, explore novel discoveries, and most importantly, forge and renew friendships.
