About Cambodian Ophthalmological Society (COS)

At present, the ophthalmology science in the world has been rapidly developed and thereof there is a need for national and international collaboration for exchange professional skills, experiences among eye care professional in Cambodia and up-to-date clinical/surgical skills to provide the best quality of eye care service delivery for all eye patients.

The Cambodian Ophthalmological Society (COS) was established in 2003 by the group of eye doctors and approved by the Ministry of Health with the mission to provide quality eye care services in all eye care facilities in all provinces of Cambodia and help all eye care professionals to improve their professional skills and good relation in their career to improve patient reliability by improving the standards of eye care service in the country to meet  international standard.

 Members of COS consist of Ophthalmologists, Basic Eye Doctors, Eye Doctors and Medical Assistants all over the country currently actively providing eye care service for all eye patients and providing eye health education and actively involved in the control of blindness in the country. Currently the COS has 92 members.

 

VISION:

To provide quality eye care services for all Cambodian people and to eliminate locally endemic blindness in the country.

Mission:

  • Provision of quality eye care services in all provinces of Cambodia
  • Reduce blindness rate to less than 0.5%  in most areas of each region
  • Help all eye care professional to improve their professional skills and good relation in their carreer
  • improve  patient reliability
  • Improve the standards of eye care service in the country to meet the international standard

 

 

Professional Ethics

 

In order to achieve the above mission the COS organizes regular Continuing Medical Education (CME) for all eye care professionals to enhance/improve their clinical, surgical and management skills such as scientific seminar, presentation of eye researches and studies published in outstanding ophthalmology journal, and journal club. Patient's education materials and various treatment guidelines have been developed in collaboration with the National Program for Eye Health (NPEH).

Cambodia is a signatory of the WHO Global Action Plan for the Prevention of Avoidable Blindness and Visual Impairment 2014 - 2019 and COS seeks to assist in ensuring that Cambodia meets its obligations, mainly through COS members’ participation in the National Program for Eye Health.

COS, as a registered member of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), work to ensure professional standards of ophthalmic care and services are met and that such care is affordable and accessible to the wider Cambodian community.

The COS became one of the council member of Asian Pacific Academic of Ophthalmology (APAO) in 2008.
